Tooth Box Progress Photos

10/30/2017

Here are process photos from beginning to end of making the Tooth shaped box. My friend Dani gave me the tooth keeper boxes a couple years ago. Took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do with them.

Teeth and Wishbones are both strange keepsakes to me. Both are former bits of a living creature. Both have strange rituals behind them. Combining these symbols seemed natural to me.

After sending out a request for wishbones my friend John sent me 23 of them! Next was asking my friend Robot of Robotwoodwerx for help with the final product (since graduation from UH I no longer have access to a wood-shop). This was my first experience out sourcing work on a project. I'm so glad I did because it came out AMAZING!

Beyond Form install progress photos

Progress Photo of the shadow landscape mural I’m working on at The Center for the Beyond Form Exhibition. I started by picking up what I found on the side of the road. Then by using colored lights and a pen light throw a shadow of the objects on to the wall and then using paint or chalk or markers to draw the shadow on to the wall. I do this is short bursts and move the light so the images pile up like a landscape.

Houston March for Science

4/22/2017

Marched with friends today in support of science. If you are confused as to why scientists and people in science based fields marched today this sums it up perfectly:

"“We are at a critical juncture. Science is under attack,” said Cara Santa Maria, a science communicator who is one of several emcees of the four-hour rally that kicked off at 10 a.m. “The very idea of evidence and logic and reason is being threatened by individuals and interests with the power to do real harm.”

Science creates jobs, halts disease, refines technology and technique. It is the very pulse of progress.

I am doing what I can to curb disastrous decision making. I've voted, signed petitions, emailed/called reps, I figure showing up to marches adds to numbers and numbers seem to count. Peaceful protest is one of the most American things you can do.

Some may think a demonstration is silly but standing in a crowd of thousands of people who share a view or many views in common is a powerful experience. I look around and am like "look you aren't alone. All these people are just as concerned as you". Its comforting.
