Studio Experiments

Salt has been exceptionally important to humans for thousands of years. Salt's ability to preserve food was a foundation of civilization. It helped to eliminate the dependence on the seasonal availability of food and it allowed travel over long distances. It was valued trade item to the point of being considered a form of currency by certain peoples. Salt was used in blessing ceremonies. It was also used as a weapon by the Roman's on their enemies farm land. In Spain and in the Spanish Empire, salt was poured onto the land owned by a convicted traitor after his house was demolished. Now salt is almost universally accessible, relatively cheap. My work revolves around objects largely. So I plan to start small and get more ambitious as I go.

Themes addressed:
  • Time

  • Meaning of salted, cured, and pickled.

  • Destruction through preservation

in the photos below I’ve included photos of my containers, glue, and process.

Also just for fun check out "we can pickle that" from Portlandia
